An introductory lesson on “the media today”

Description: This lesson introduces students to the basic notions of mass media developments and their impact on society.
Materials: PowerPoint slide shows, a gif and worksheets.
Procedure:
Activity 1: Students are introduced to terms and notions through the first slide show. Notions are given in brief. Photocopies of the relevant vocabulary have been provided as homework assignment- students are expected to have studied the vocabulary prior to the presentation. (time: 17m)
Objectives:
  • Learning to relate in order to link and compare ideas and concepts, social trends and basic media developments. Enhancing thinking skills.
  • Acquainting students with media terminology.
  • To help students’ compare different media such as the internet, the radio, the TV and magazines.
  • To help students’ be aware of media habits.
  • To help students talk about social networking websites.
  • To help them understand the positive and negative aspects of internet use.
Activity 2: Students answer five questions in relation to the slideshow and develop any relevant ideas.
(time: 6m)
Objectives:
  • To develop students’ question and answer formation skills.
  • To develop students’ communication skills.
Activity 3: Students work in pairs and try to identify the vocabulary from a gif. Then they must group the words into verbs, nouns and adjectives. (time: 6m).
Objectives:
  • To encourage pair work and participation.
  • To stimulate their interest by way of a fun and challenging activity.
Activity 4: Identifying the present perfect simple from the first slideshow. Revising the present perfect simple, presenting the present perfect continuous and comparing both via a second slideshow of colourful collages. Students contribute by creating their own sentences in both tenses (time: 16m).
Objectives:
  • To help students effectively reproduce both tenses in everyday language. 
Homework Assignment: A sentence completion exercise worksheet on both the present perfect simple and the present perfect continuous is provided.
